On September 10, the Province of Ontario announced new funding to support the revitalization of Main Street in the Geraldton Ward of the Municipality of Greenstone. The investment of $61.8 Million represents a significant step forward in modernizing local infrastructure and supporting the long-term growth of the community.
The Main Street project has been in the works for several years, with strong support from Greenstone Council, dedicated lobbying to government partners, and the tireless efforts of municipal staff. The revitalization will enhance the vibrancy of the Geraldton Ward’s downtown core, improve safety for pedestrians and motorists, and strengthen the local economy by creating a more attractive, accessible, and resilient community hub. This project also reinforces Greenstone’s role as a key service and transportation corridor for major regional developments, including the Ring of Fire.
In addition to upgrading roads, sidewalks, and public spaces, the project will involve significant underground work to replace aging water, sewer, and stormwater systems. This means going down far beneath the surface to ensure the upgrades are done right and built to last for generations.
Mayor Jamie McPherson welcomed the announcement, saying: “Today’s funding announcement is a tremendous milestone for the Municipality of Greenstone. The revitalization of Main Street in the Geraldton Ward has been years in the making, with strong support from Council, dedicated advocacy, and the hard work of our staff. Early planning and preliminary work made possible through NORDS funding helped lay the foundation for this project to move forward. We thank the Government of Ontario for this investment in our community. This transformative project will revitalize our downtown, improve safety, and drive development along the Corridor to Prosperity in our region.”
The Municipality of Greenstone looks forward to working with the Ministry of Infrastructure and community partners to finalize plans and move forward with construction.
