The Municipality of Greenstone is reminding residents of curbside garbage disposal collection requirements to help protect the safety of Waste Collection Staff

Why is this important?

Waste collection workers are at the highest risk of injury among all municipal workers.

Common hazards include:
  • Overweight bags causing strains, back injuries, or falls
  • Improper disposal of sharps, which can lead to serious cuts or punctures and serious health conditions
  • Reaching into oversized containers to remove bags, increasing the risk of injury
  • Lifting and emptying oversized containers, which can cause strains or accidents
  • Oversized containers are meant to be used with automated garbage trucks, not manual collection

Container (Garbage Can) Size:

  • Maximum 175 litres (40 gallons)
  • Must have handles and a secure lid
  • Maximum weight per can set at curb (including garbage in bags) is 23 kilograms (50 pounds)

Bags:

  • Bags must be securely tied and free of sharps (e.g., needles, broken glass) and placed in an appropriate container (garbage can)

Enforcement:

  • Garbage placement that does not meet these requirements by July 30 will not be collected
  • Garbage placement that poses a risk to staff’s health and safety will be tagged and will not be collected
