By-laws are local rules made by the Municipality of Greenstone to address community-specific issues like zoning, noise, property maintenance, and animal control. They must be followed by all residents and property owners.

Council enacted the Clean Yards By-Law on January 15, 2024. The Clean Yards By-Law 24-04 outlines the general standards for all properties which includes restrictions of derelict vehicles.

  • Storing derelict (not road worthy) or inoperative vehicles, machinery, boats, trailers, or similar items is not permitted
  • One inoperative vehicle may be stored in a yard if it is fully and completely covered with a canvas or similar opaque (not see through), weather-resistant tarp in good condition
  • Property owners who fail to comply with  the By-Law are subject to fines and penalties

If someone fails to comply with local By-Laws, they can face penalties or fines, and in some cases, the municipality may take enforcement actions to ensure compliance. This could involve things like issuing tickets, imposing fines, or even taking legal action if the issue is not resolved. By-Laws help maintain order and safety in the community, so it’s important to be aware of and adhere to them.
