Learn about becoming a candidate for the office of mayor, councillor or school board trustee with the Municipality of Greenstone. The Municipality of Greenstone in partnership with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs hosted a candidate and third-party advertisers information session on Tuesday, July 5, 2022. 

Election Sign Information

Council approved By-Law 22-63 being a by-law to regulate the placement of signs in the Municipality of Greenstone on July 11, 2022.

Use of Corporate Resources Policy

Council approved Policy 22-35 on April 11, 2022 to establish rules concerning the use of corporate resources for election purposes. The Act prohibits a municipality from making a contribution to a candidate. It also prohibits a candidate, or someone acting on the candidate's behalf, from accepting a contribution from a person who is not entitled to make a contribution.  

Nomination process

Nominations for the 2022 - 2026 Council term are now closed. The deadline to file a nomination for this term was at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2022. Nomination information for the 2026 - 2030 Council term will be provided in Spring of 2026.

 Council Eligibility

 

Anyone who would like to be a candidate in a municipal election must be, and remain qualified throughout the election period and, if elected, throughout the term of office.

To qualify, you must be:

  • A resident of the Municipality of Greenstone or an owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of Greenstone, or the spouse of an owner or tenant
  • A Canadian citizen
  • 18 years of age or above by voting day
  • Not an employee of the municipality
  • Not legally prohibited from voting
  • Not disqualified from holding municipal office by any legislation

SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE QUALIFICATIONS

You are qualified to be a candidate for School Board Trustee if you:

  • Meet the listed criteria for a municipal candidate
  • Live within the geographic area of the school board
  • Are a supporter of that school board

YOU ARE INELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE

 

You are not qualified to be a municipal or school board trustee candidate if you are:

  • Not able to vote by law
  • Not able to vote in the municipality
  • Disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office
  • A judge of any court
  • A member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, a Senator or a member of the House of Commons
  • An inmate of a penal or correctional institution under sentence of imprisonment

Withdrawal of Candidacy

If you decide to withdraw from the election, you must notify the Clerk  in writing no later than 2 p.m. on nomination day.

If you withdraw before nomination day, you can receive a refund for the nomination filing fee. You are still required to submit a completed financial disclosure that covers all financial transactions made up to the date the nomination was withdrawn. If you fail to withdraw before 2 p.m. on nomination day, your name will appear on the ballot.

Monday, May 2, 2022 - Nomination and registration period begins

Friday, August 19, 2022 @ 2 p.m. - Nomination Day - deadline to file a nomination, withdraw a nomination or change office.

Monday, August 22, 2022 - Last day for Clerk to certify nomination papers.

Thursday, September 1, 2022 - Voter's list available to candidates

Wednesday, October 19, 2022 - Voting Period begins

Monday, October 24, 2022 - Election Day

Tuesday, January 3, 2023 - End of campaign period for candidates and third party advertisers

Friday, March 31, 2023 - Deadline for candidates to file the initial financial statement

 Campaign Finances

 

All nominated candidates for the 2022 municipal and school board elections, including those not elected, those who withdrew their nomination and those whose nomination was rejected by the Clerk, must disclose and report their campaign contributions and expenses for their election campaign period as determined by the rules set out in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.

No contributions shall be accepted or expenses made prior to filing your nomination. A campaign bank account must be opened for election campaign purposes prior to spending money or accepting contributions. All contributions of money, including contributions from yourself, must be deposited in the campaign account.  All campaign expenses must be paid from the campaign account. If you do not any spend money or accept any contributions, you do not need to open an account.
