There’s a lot more happening beneath Main Street than what you’ll eventually see on the surface.

As excavation continues, crews are uncovering the conditions that contributed to years of heaving, cracking and uneven pavement - including irregular rock, deteriorated base materials and pockets of organic material.

The project is addressing these issues from the ground up, with underground infrastructure replacement, removal of unsuitable materials and construction of a stronger, more consistent road foundation designed for Northern Ontario conditions.

Much of this important work will eventually be hidden beneath the finished road.

The Municipality of Greenstone is advising residents that an emergency response exercise will be taking place at the Nakina Airport today, September 23.

Residents may notice an increased presence of emergency response vehicles and personnel in and around the airport during the exercise.

This is a planned training exercise. There is no emergency, and no action is required from the public.
