Candidates

Anyone who would like to be a Council Candidate in a Municipal Election must be, and remain qualified throughout the election period and, if elected, throughout the term of office.

To qualify, you must be:

  • A resident of the Municipality of Greenstone or an owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of Greenstone, or the spouse of an owner or tenant
  • A Canadian citizen
  • 18 years of age or above by voting day
  • Not legally prohibited from voting
  • Not disqualified from holding municipal office by any legislation
  • Not an employee of the Municipality*

*does not apply to School Board Trustee Elections

You are qualified to be a candidate for School Board Trustee if you:

  • Meet the listed criteria for a municipal candidate
  • Are not employed by the school board
  • Live within the geographic area of the school board
  • Are a supporter of that school board

You are not qualified to be a municipal or school board trustee candidate if you are:

  • Not able to vote by law
  • Not able to vote in the Municipality
  • Disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office
  • A judge of any court
  • A member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, a Senator or a member of the House of Commons
  • An inmate of a penal or correctional institution under sentence of imprisonment

If you decide to withdraw from the election, you must notify the Clerk  in writing no later than 2 p.m. on Nomination Day, being Friday, August 21, 2026.

If you withdraw before nomination day, you can receive a refund for the nomination filing fee. You are still required to submit a completed financial disclosure that covers all financial transactions made up to the date the nomination was withdrawn. If you fail to withdraw before 2 p.m. on Nomination Day, your name will appear on the ballot.

Use of Corporate Resources Policy

The Municipal Election Act prohibits a municipality from making a contribution to a candidate. It also prohibits a candidate, or someone acting on the candidate's behalf, from accepting a contribution from a person who is not entitled to make a contribution. Council approved Policy 22-35 on April 11, 2022 to establish rules concerning the use of corporate resources for election purposes. Changes are currently being proposed and an update to the policy is expected in late April. This page will be updated accordingly.

Nomination process

The first day on which a candidate can file a nomination for the 2026 Municipal Election is May 1, 2026. The nomination period will continue until the third Friday in August. The deadline to file a nomination for this term will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026. This is also the last day which a nomination may be withdrawn.

All nominated candidates for the 2026 Municipal and School Board Elections, including those not elected, those who withdrew their nomination and those whose nomination was rejected by the Clerk, must disclose and report their campaign contributions and expenses for their election campaign period as determined by the rules set out in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.

No contributions shall be accepted or expenses made prior to filing your nomination. A campaign bank account must be opened for election campaign purposes prior to spending money or accepting contributions. All contributions of money, including contributions from yourself, must be deposited in the campaign account. All campaign expenses must be paid from the campaign account. If you do not any spend money or accept any contributions, you do not need to open an account.

After the end of the campaign period, all candidates, including those not elected or those that withdrew their nomination, or those whose nomination was rejected by the Clerk must file a financial statement disclosing all contributions and expenses for their campaigns. The deadline to file financial statements was March 31, 2023. 

A person cannot raise or spend money on an election campaign until they have filed their nomination. A campaign bank account shall have been opened for election campaign purposes before spending any money or accepting any contributions. All contributions shall be deposited into the campaign account. 

Candidates shall keep record of:

  • receipts issued including value for every contribution
  • type of contribution (i.e. money, goods or services)
  • contributors name and address
  • all expenses and receipts issued for each expense

All records shall be retained until November 15, 2026 or when the 2026 Council takes office.

Financial Statements

The financial statement must be filed with the Clerk with whom the nomination was filed on or before Friday March 31, 2022 at 2 p.m.  It is the responsibility of each candidate to file a complete and accurate financial statement on time.
