🐻 Protect Wildlife. Protect Our Community

Did you know that feeding wildlife is prohibited in the Municipality of Greenstone? Our local by-law clearly states that no person shall feed, or allow the feeding of, wild animals or place food out for them.

This rule exists for a reason - and it’s backed by Ontario’s Bear Wise program.

When wildlife (especially bears) get access to human food, they:

  • Lose their natural fear of people
  • Return repeatedly to neighborhoods
  • Can become aggressive or dangerous
  • Often have to be relocated or euthanized

👉 A fed bear is a dead bear.

According to Ontario’s Bear Wise guidance, the best way to prevent encounters is simple:

  • Never intentionally feed wildlife
  • Secure garbage, compost, and recycling
  • Clean BBQs and outdoor cooking areas
  • Remove bird feeders when bears are active (or ensure they don’t attract other wildlife)
  • Pick ripe fruit and clean up fallen fruit

🐦 Bird feeders are only allowed if they are inaccessible to wildlife and kept clean of spilled seed.

✔️ By removing food sources, we help keep wildlife wild - and our community safe.

🤝 Let’s all do our part to reduce human-wildlife conflict in Greenstone.

If you spot a bear in a residential area, please report it to the appropriate wildlife authorities. For non-emergency encounters call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327. For emergency encounters call 911.
