Student Cadet Recruitment

Becoming a member of the fire service is a unique and rewarding experience! There are not many environments that challenge you learn, perform, and grow on this level.
Maybe you want to pursue a career in emergency services, want to help out your community, or meet new people. No matter why you are looking at this page, the fire service is a great way to do all those things, and:

Student members get to be involved with most aspects of the department such as training, public education, and maintenance while preparing for eventual transition into a regular firefighter role when they turn 18 or finish graduating requirements of secondary school.
With opportunity comes commitment. Members are expected to actively participate in offered programs and opportunities, while conducting themselves in a way that positively reflects on them and the service. Emergency services are in a position of high public trust which is valued by the department.
Student member positions are limited, and can be competitive to obtain.
Highschool Co-Op
Student Cadet members are eligible to participate in a co-op placements with the department! Subject to limitations placed by the school or board, student members participate in all the day-to-day activities of the department, including ride-alongs!
Note: It is a pre-requisite of those seeking a co-op with our department to be active Student Cadet members in good standing as this experience is meant to enhance their basic training. There are limitations placed for certain call types and activities to avoid exposure to elevated safety risks or traumatic situations.
Student members seeking a co-op need to submit for a Vulnerable Sector Check as part of their placement approvals.
Earn while you learn!
Greenstone Fire can provide you with all the same training and certification opportunities that you would normally pay to go to college for, while paying you!
As a Student Cadet, you are eligible to participate in certification training programs such as:
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter Levels 1 & 2
- NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials - Awareness and Operations
- NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor
- NFPA 1006 Water Rescue Awareness
- First Aid
- Incident Management System
- ...and more!
You will also get access to other industry recognized certification, and training often restricted to fire departments. Costs for any approved training are sponsored by the department.
Once you transition to being a regular firefighter, even more opportunities are available!

To be considered for membership as a Student Cadet, you will need to submit a completed Application Package (or a resume containing the same information), Medical Self-Declaration, Criminal History Self-Declaration, and agree to the Student Cadet Membership Terms. These can be submitted by emailing fire@greenstone.ca, or dropped off at any Ward Office.

Are you eligible?
To be eligible for a Student Cadet member position, you must:
- Live within Greenstone and be able to attend a fire station for training and other activities
- Work collaboratively with other members of the Fire Department
- Be 16 or 17 years of age
- You may apply up to 6 months before you turn 16 for consideration
- Be actively enrolled in and attending secondary school or an equivalent alternative learning program
- Have the physical ability to carry out the duties of a firefighter without medical concerns
- Not have a criminal history or pending judicial matters
What is the process?
The selection process will consist of the following components:

All applicants are required to submit:
- Application Form or a resume containing the same information
- Medical Self-Declaration
- Criminal History Self-Declaration, and
- Student Cadet Membership Terms
A review of applications will be conducted, and selected applicants will have the opportunity to advance to Stage 2 of the selection process. Completed forms can be emailed to fire@greenstone.ca
Stage 2: Interview and References
Interviews for the membership positions will be conducted by Administration. You may be required to bring documentation to support your application or any information in it.
The references provided will be contacted and asked a series of questions regarding your intentions in joining the department, suitability for the role and ability to perform expectations. As this is a position of trust that works in a team environment, there are also questions related to team dynamics, reflection on the organization, and integrity of physical access and information security.
After successfully completing all of the requirements, you may be offered membership with the department!
