The role offers ample opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Though the role description says Volunteer, members are far more than that! The fire service is central to and built on the community it serves. Members participate in calls, training, public education, events, prevention, maintenance, and much more!

Our members are the fire department in Greenstone, and take this responsibility very seriously. With opportunity comes commitment. Members are expected to actively participate in emergency responses and training. It is expected that you will become a certified firefighter through various training opportunities in order to meet legislative and departmental requirements. Though the department is developing opportunities and programs to best meet the scheduling needs of members, there is a significant amount of time you should expect to dedicate to this role especially in the first few years. Understanding this will ensure your success in the role and that you get the most out of the experience. For this sacrifice, members are given a monetary consideration for time spent carrying out their required duties.

 You will become known in the community as a member of the fire service. There is an expectation that you will conduct yourself professionally not only within your team but in public as well.

To be considered for membership, you will need to submit a completed Application Package (or a resume containing the same information) and Consent Waiver and Release. These can be submitted by emailing fire@greenstone.ca, or dropped off at any Ward Office.

In addition, before beginning with the department you will have to submit an MTO 3-Year Driver Abstract, Vulnerable Sector Check (criminal record check), and completed Medical Form.

Are you eligible?

To be eligible for a volunteer firefighter position, you must:

  • Live or work within Greenstone and be able to provide an effective turnout to a Fire Station
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Fire Department 
  • Have a valid Ontario Driver's Licence, G Level or higher. Preference may be given to those with a DZ Licence.
  • Have a Grade 12 Diploma (or education equivalent)
  • Receive a satisfactory driving record and vulnerable sector criminal background check
  • Have the physical ability to carry out the duties of a firefighter

Please note that you must be 18 years of age or older to apply for a firefighter position. 

What is the process?

The selection process will consist of the following components:

Stage 1:  Application Submission and Review        

Stage 2:  Interview and References                                           

Stage 3:  Physical and Suitability Testing

After successfully completing all of the requirements, you may be offered membership with the department!
