Recreation and Playground Master Plan

Update

Following extensive community feedback, a draft Recreation Master Plan has been developed. The Municipality of Greenstone is requesting residents review the draft Master Plan and provide their feedback through a FEEDBACK SURVEY.

Also available for viewing below are two research documents, whose information was utilized in the development of the draft Master Plan. These documents are called the “What We Learned” and “What We Heard” reports.

As well, a “Summary Report” was created. It is a smaller and more plain language version of the draft Master Plan that contains the primary components of the draft Master Plan. Please read at least this report prior to completing the Feedback Survey.

Hard copy versions of the Summary Report, the draft Master Plan, the “What We Learned” report and the “What We Heard” report are available at any Municipal Ward Office or Greenstone Library branches.

Please review the draft Master Plan (and/or the Summary Report) before providing your feedback. All feedback needs to be provided by 5:00 p.m. on September 30, 2024. Please limit your feedback to one submission.

The feedback you provide will be compiled by the project team. Potential changes to the draft Master Plan will be determined once the feedback is reviewed. A summary of the feedback will be presented to the Municipality of Greenstone.

About the Recreation & Playground Master Plan

Including programs, facilities, parks, and playgrounds, recreation services are highly valued by residents and contribute to the health and wellness of individuals, families, and the community itself. To ensure these services are optimized and to ensure the best use of resources, the Municipality of Greenstone is developing a Recreation & Playground Master Plan. This plan will set priorities and identify opportunities to address gaps in services and build on strengths with the goal of addressing current and future needs. The Master Plan will address indoor and outdoor facilities and spaces, playgrounds, and programs & events.

The Recreation & Playground Master Plan will be based on a thorough program of research that includes an examination and analysis of facilities, spaces, programs and events; community demographics; trends and leading practices in the provision of these services; and community contributors to recreation services. Community members will also be asked to share their thoughts.

In March 2024, in-person open housed were hosted in Beardmore, Geraldton, Longlac, and Nakina which gave opportunities for the public to provide their opinions and help shape the Master Plan. In addition to some community open houses, several surveys will be fielded to gather information from residents, organizations delivering recreation services, youth, and community contributors.

Please review the information in the tabs below to learn more about the project and to stay up to date. If you have any questions please email us.

Engagement with the community is a critical component in the development of the Recreation & Playground Master Plan. There are several engagement activities that will be used. Each is noted below.

Community Discussion Sessions

These sessions will be comprised of two separate tactics:

An in-person open house will be hosted in Beardmore, Geraldton, Longlac, and Nakina

  • Attendees will learn about the Master Plan, its purpose, and the process used to develop it.
  • Attendees will provide some initial opinions about the provision of recreation in the Municipality.

  • The survey will gather the input of all household members (one response per household) about participation and utilization, barriers to participation, satisfaction with current provision, suggestions for improvement, and other topics.

  Community Group Survey
  • Organized groups providing recreation programming to residents will be invited to participate in an online survey.
  • One response per group answering questions about participation trends, facility utilization, challenges, and opinions to enhance service delivery.

Youth Survey
  • While included in the household survey, youth in the community will be able to directly share their thoughts on the current provision of recreation services in the Municipality of Greenstone. As well they will share their opinions on their desired future for recreation.
