The law requires that every two years each lifeguard has to be evaluated in order to keep their lifeguard certifications. On May 31, 2009, the Geraldton Pool's lifeguard team had their rescue skills tested. They were put through mock rescue situations and did very well with each one. The situations varied from seizures and spinal injuries, to chemical burns and public relations. Each lifeguard then had to show the evaluator that they could do the following fitness requirements:
*run 5 metres, swim 15 metres, rescue a victim on the bottom in the deep end of the pool, and then carry the victim to the shallow end
*swim 15 metres to rescue a drowning non-swimmer, then carry them 5 metres
*roll over a spinal injury victim in the deep end, then carry them to the shallow end
*swim 10 metres, get a 20 lb brick on the bottom of the deep end, then carry it out of the water for 5 metres
I am very proud to say that every lifeguard who participated in the re-certification passed, and now possess their qualifications for another two years. The photo below shows some of our lifeguards during their re-certification. To view some of the lifeguards in action, click on the link, wait for the download, and watch the video.
