Roles & Responsibilities
The Public Services Department is a multifaceted operation that is comprised of 3 divisions: Public Works, Facilities & Parks, and Airports. Each division oversees operational and maintenance functions of infrastructure and equipment to meet standards imposed by regulatory agencies.
The largest division, Public Works, is responsible for the following infrastructure:
- Water Supply & Distribution (ie. water and sewage treatment, sanitary sewers, hydrants and watermains)
- Roads (including lanes, sidewalks, streetlights, drainage and snow removal)
- Sanitary Landfills (ie. garbage collection, recycling and waste disposal)
- Cemeteries
The Facilities & Parks division is responsible for the maintenance of all municipal buildings within each Ward, and oversees the operations of each Ward recreation complex and municipal parks.
The Airports division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Greenstone Regional Airport in Geraldton and the R.Elmer Ruddick Nakina Airport.

A formal work order process is in place to address Public Works issues and communicate staff instructions. To have your concern addressed, direct your request to Katherine Alton at the Administration Office.
NOTICE TO ALL CONTRACTORS, PROPERTY OWNERS AND TENANTS
Residents of GREENSTONE are reminded that Building Permits are required for all construction, alterations and repairs to new or existing buildings and dwellings. If you are unsure about the requirement for a permit relating to your project, call your Ward Office.
Building Permits are required for the installation of wood stoves, wood combination furnaces and chimneys.
Contractors are advised that hookups to municipal services must be inspected by municipal staff before backfilling. Failure to comply will result in an order to uncover the work.
Applications for Building and Demolition Permits are available at all Ward Offices from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
