Greenstone - Spirit of the North

Municipal Economic Development > Mineral Development Initiative

 Project Overview

The Municipality of Greenstone has undertaken the creation of a multi layered mapping resource that will bring into a digitized framework the vast array of existing exploration and mineral development information relating to the Greenstone Region.  Such information currently exists at various locations and in divergent formats. This data compilation will provide easy and timely access to exploration and mineral development information for the mineral exploration and mining sectors. The data compilation has been completed for a pilot study area of the Greenstone Belt; namely, the geographic townships of Eva and Summers.

This portion of the project was funded by the Municipality of Greenstone, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, Fednor, and the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, with technical support from the Resident Geologist Program.

 How to View the Maps

The maps that have been created for the pilot area of Eva and Summers townships can be viewed in Google Earth. This allows you to view the maps together with satellite imagery and other datasets.  Google Earth can be downloaded for free.

The information that was compiled is organized into maps and individual map layers. The maps and individual map layers are listed at the left side of this page along with a small map sample and description. You may view any number of maps and map layers together in Google Earth.

Once you have opened a map in Google Earth, you will be able to view information about that datasets by clicking on points on the map. Clicking on a point on the map will open an information box that displays details about that point.

To view a map:
1. Click on a map title link in the map listing.
2. Choose to either open the file using Google Earth or save it to your computer* and open it manually.
3. Once the map opens in Google Earth, navigate around the area and explore the map layers:
  - Turn map layers on and off by checking and unchecking the boxes beside the layer names.
  - Expand a group of map layers by clicking the plus sign beside the layer name.
  - Click on points on the map to view details.
  - Zoom and pan using the navigation tools and mouse scroll wheel.

*Some of the maps will be updated over time.  If you choose to save the files to your computer you should check this site periodically to download updated versions of the maps.

 FAQ

Where can I download Google Earth?
Google Earth can be downloaded for free by clicking the button below.

The Pro and Plus versions of Google Earth that can be purchased are NOT needed to view these maps.

What version of Google Earth do I need?
It is recommended that you upgrade Google Earth to the most recent version available.

How do I use Google Earth?
Try a
Google Earth tutorial to get familiar with using this program.

What do the symbols on the map mean?
Look at the
legend to see what each symbol on the map represents.

Can I view the maps without an internet connection?
You will need an internet connection to download the map files from this site, however, if you save the map files to your computer you will be able to view them while not connected to the internet. Some map layers contain links to online documents and these links will not work if you are not connected to the internet.

How up to date are the maps?
Check the Date Created note in the map description beside the sample image to find out when the data was last updated. Some datasets are updated on a monthly basis, while others were created at one point in time and will not change.

How can I contribute data or make comments and suggestions about the project?
Use the feedback form on this page or contact GEOMA by email
