Canadian Cancer Society: Longlac Branch

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of the life of people living with cancer.

The Longlac Branch has 11 members and we meet irregularly to work on our annual projects. Our main fundraiser is our Funspiel. This is a very popular bonspiel usually held the last Sunday of March. It is a full day of fun and curling, winding up with a pot luck dinner and prizes are awarded.

In April, we have our Daffodil sale when we sell flowers to kick off Cancer Month. Immediately after this, with the help of our many volunteer, we canvas the local businesses and homes for donations to the Cancer Society. Coin boxes are placed in local businesses several times a year.

Our Volunteer Driver Program now has 5 volunteers that are available to provide transportation to cancer patients who need this service. The coordinator for this program is Dorothy Sullivan at 876-4463.

During the year, we take donations In Memoriam or In Honour and income tax receipts will be issued and a card will be sent to the designated family. The contact person for this is Carole McLean at 876-2228.

In 2005, the Longlac members were able to raise $10,607.34 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

New members are always welcome to assist in fundraising and the education of the public about cancer.
